Does God Work Miracles Today? Part 10 (The Prayer Motivator Devotional #379)

27 Aug

Our prayer motivator verse from the Word of God today is Matthew 6:9-13 which reads: “After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.”

Allow me to share with you some important insights regarding this verse from Matthew Henry’s Commentary:

And we must in prayer see his eye upon us: thence he has a full and clear view of all our wants and burdens and desires, and all our infirmities. It is the firmament of his power likewise, as well as of his prospect. He is not only, as a Father, able to help us, able to do great things for us, more than we can ask or think; he has wherewith to supply our needs, for every good gift is from above. He is a Father, and therefore we may come to him with boldness, but a Father in heaven, and therefore we must come with reverence. Thus all our prayers should correspond with that which is our great aim as Christians, and that is, to be with God in heaven. God and heaven, the end of our whole conversation, must be particularly eyed in every prayer; there is the centre to which we are all tending. By prayer, we send before us thither, where we profess to be going.

We will discuss this verse further in the next broadcast.

My personal encouragement to you today is that you should make it your business to pray in the morning to get your day started. As a couple, make a concrete decision to pray together in the morning before you go your separate ways. I do not care how busy you are. I do not care what you have on your agenda, take the time to pray together in the mornings before you part ways. Don’t let it slip by you. Don’t let the devil take that away from you. You must pray together! The devil is constantly working, and after you have been asleep all night, if you don’t quickly get in communication with God, I guarantee you the devil will try to get something in between you. I have learned over the years that the days I slip up in prayer or try to get some other things done before I pray with my family, the devil tries to get in between my wife and me over absolutely nothing. You need to pray in the mornings together as soon as possible after waking up.

Our prayer motivator quote today is from Dick Eastman. He said: “The greatest hindrance to effective prayer is sin. Satan’s greatest goal is to keep us from our knees.”

Our prayer motivator devotional today is part 10 of our series titled “DOES GOD WORK MIRACLES TODAY?” from Dr. John R. Rice.

In apostolic times it was never true that every saved person worked miracles or had these signs following him. Only those had miracles who received faith for the miracles. One who has faith for salvation gets salvation. One who has faith for a mountain to be cast into the sea has a mountain cast into the sea. One who has faith for a revival gets a revival.

I think it is important to remind you that the Lord Jesus never meant these miraculous signs to be the plaything of the curious or the charlatan. These signs were never to exalt men. No one in Bible times ever picked up a snake and let it bite him to show his faith. No one in Bible times drank poison to show that it would not harm him. Yet Paul, on the island of Melita, was bitten by a viper, a very poisonous snake, and by faith he shook off the beast into the fire and felt no harm. And in the same chapter, in Acts 28:8, we learn that Paul laid his hands upon the father of Publius and prayed for him and healed him.
