TODAY’S POEM: “How Precious We Are” (Author Unknown)

VERSE: 1 Corinthians 7:10-16 (Commentary from Matthew Henry’s Commentary)

QUOTE: “If we would pray aright, the first thing we should do is to see to it that we really get an audience with God, that we really get into His very presence. Before a word of petition is offered, we should have the definite consciousness that we are talking to God, and should believe that He is listening and is going to grant the thing that we ask of Him.” –R.A. Torrey

TOPIC: God, Sex, and Prayer: Don’t Be So Heavenly-minded that You’re No Earthly Good

Over the past 2 broadcasts, we have been discussing the topic of God, sex, and prayer. I am convinced that many Christian men and women have destroyed their marriages because they do not know how to live a balanced Christian life. Some Christian women, and even some men, believe it or not, who are testosterone challenged, destroy their marriages because they have this ridiculous idea that they cannot have a strong prayer life with God and still enjoy hot sex with their mate. They become more concerned with following their pastor in a prayer and fasting campaign than taking care of business at home. Some of these silly women become more dedicated to their pastor than they are to their husbands, and tragically, because they are not having sex with their husbands at home as they should be, they end up, after they have had their little prayer and fasting session, having sex with the pastor. And then, as James 1:14-15 says, “But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.” And then you have a mess on your hands. Now, don’t get mad with me because you know I am telling you the truth. Don’t get mad with me and cut me off. The Apostle Paul asked in Galatians 4:16, “Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?” I don’t know about your situation. You just think I know about your situation because you are under conviction. In other words, they become so heavenly-minded that they are no earthly good.

Some people make the mistake of getting so spiritual and holy that they somehow cannot make the transition to get down and dirty when they need to, and they miss out on the joy and excitement of the act of marriage. (Sorry, folks, contrary to what some church leaders try to make you believe, there is nothing clean and pristine about sex if you’re going to do it right. This is why Christian brother, Charlie Shedd, wrote years ago, a whole chapter in his book on marriage, about “clean up” after sex. My dear brother, who I believe is one of the best Bible teachers in the world and certainly the best Christian writer, Tony Evans, wrote a book titled, “Sacred Sex”. I know what he is talking about, but the strong desires and feelings that I have have toward sex down through the years have been anything but sacred, and yet, believe it or not, I am still saved. I believe most men will agree with me on that, but I understand what my dear brother is saying.)

There are some husbands who for some reason, get in their minds that they cannot be the spiritual head of the home and at the same time take care of business in the bedroom at home. Praying to God and handling real life marriage and family issues is not an either/or proposition; it is a both/and situation.

Allow me to say here, beloved, that many people do not understand this, but I believe that people who are truly born again and who are spiritual, have the best sex in the world. My theory is, the reason for that is because a lot of the major issues and questions in the couple’s lives — spiritually, psychologically, and philosophically — on important subjects such as life, purpose, money, death, dealing with trouble, and the after life, have been resolved through Jesus Christ, their Saviour. So, with those things resolved, they can relax and enjoy the sex part of their lives. If you are married, you can really enjoy married life, including your prayer life, your spiritual life, sex and everything else that goes with it, that is, if you are not screwed up in your head about balance about such matters….
